Interacting with Windows Server Update Services from Visual Basic code

A few days ago I had to solve an unusual problem, since I never had to face it before and because it was basically "out of scope" if related to my usual job. Inside the organization that I work for, where several thousands of users work, Windows updates are deployed via the Windows Server Update Services which are installed on server machines.
